World Ocean Day 2019

Oceans, the key part of the biosphere are one of the most important source for food security and medicines as well as life survival on earth. Oceans are also very necessary to maintain the ecosystems balance.  Thus, saving our ocean is the responsibility of each and every person!

The 8th of June is the official UN-designated World Oceans Day for ocean celebration worldwide.  It is a day to reflect on ways to resolve ocean issues as well as to mark its importance in our lives, focusing on what actions each of us can take to protect the ocean and safeguard vulnerable communities and places.

Every 8th of June, we have an opportunity to raise global awareness of the benefits humankind derives from the ocean and our individual and collective duty to use its resources sustainably. Future generations will also depend on the ocean for their livelihoods!  World Oceans Day provides an opportunity to all to celebrate the natural climate, weather, food and oxygen balance with lots of economic, environmental and social benefits.  It brings an opportunity to all to understand all the challenges come to way in regulating the global climate to maintain the proper ecosystem and livelihoods of human beings.

This year, the theme for World Oceans Day is “Gender and Oceans”, an opportunity to explore the gender dimension of humankind’s relationship with the ocean.  The importance of gender equality, in particular for the effective conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources is increasingly being recognised.

In that context, the Ministry of Ocean Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping and the Mauritius Oceanography Institute would be organising a series of activities for secondary school students as well as the general public across Mauritius in collaboration with several ocean partners and other key stakeholders.

The objectives would be:

  1. motivating the public to change their attitudes by encouraging them to understand the need and importance of oceans in their daily life;
  2. promoting the oceans conservation by encouraging everyone to become a good caretaker of the oceans and other water resources;
  3. raising public awareness of the ocean and the current challenges faced by the community in connection with marine biodiversity;
  4. encouragement to think about what the oceans mean to each of us, and what oceans have to offer;
  5. to reach out to youngsters to become caretakers of our oceans and to conserve them for future generations
