Notice of Vacancy

The Mauritius Oceanography Institute (MOI) is a parastatal body under the aegis of the Ministry of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries. The main objects of the Institute are, inter alia, to foster interest in research and development in relation to oceanography and to advise Government on the formulation and implementation of policies and programmes in respect of oceanography and related aspects.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates who wish to be considered for the post of Deputy Director at the Mauritius Oceanography Institute.

Age Limit for Entry

Candidates, unless already in the Public Service, should not have reached the age of 50 years by the closing date of this advertisement.

Qualifications

Candidates who possess:

  1. a MSc from a recognised institution with five years’ post-qualification experience in any field of Natural Sciences acceptable to the Board of the Mauritius Oceanography Institute.
    or
  2. a PhD in any field of Natural Sciences from a recognised institution with three years’ post- qualification experience in any field of Natural Sciences or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the Board of the Mauritius Oceanography Institute.

Candidates should:-

  1. possess good leadership, managerial and organisational skills;
  2. possess good interpersonal and communication skills;
  3. be familiar with administration, financial and procurement practice in the Public Sector; and
  4. be computer liberate.

Salary

The permanent and pensionable post of Deputy Director carries salary in the scale of Rs 91375 x 3125 – 100750 (MOI 22)

Roles and Responsibilities:

To assist the Director in the supervision of all the Scientific, Technical and Administrative Units of the Mauritius Oceanography Institute.

Duties

  1. To assist the Director of the Mauritius of Oceanography in the performance of the following duties:
    1. To foster interest in research and development in relation to oceanography;
    2. To advise Government on the formulation and implementation of policies and programmes in respect of oceanography and related aspects;
    3. To manage and optimize the use of funds and other resources for the purposes of the MOI Act;
    4. To coordinate, collaborate and cooperate with other institutions, agencies and persons on national, regional and global issues within its fields of interest;
    5. To assist any organization, body or person in creating sustainable research and development programmes in those areas of interest and activity relating to oceanography;
    6. To identify training needs in the field of oceanography;
    7. To ensure that projects are in line with the Strategic Plan of the Institute;
    8. To guide scientists in preparing and implementing scientific projects being implemented by the Institute.
  2. To make available to other institutions, bodies or persons, on such terms and conditions as it thinks fit knowledge, expertise, equipment or facilities of the Institute;
  3. To use ICT in the performance of his duties;
  4. To perform such other duties directly related to the main duties listed above or related to the delivery of the output and results expected from the Deputy Director in the roles ascribed to him.

Mode of Application and Closing Date

  1. Qualified candidates should submit their application on the prescribed MOI Application Form which may be obtained at the Reception Desk, Mauritius Oceanography Institute at Albion and downloaded as follows: MOI Application Form
  2. Completed application forms should reach the Director, Mauritius Oceanography Institute, Avenue des Anchois, Morcellement de Chazal, 91005, Albion, Republic of Mauritius not later than Thursday 04 December 2025 by 16:00 hours through registered post and proof of postmark will be noted.
  3. The envelope should be clearly marked “Deputy Director” in the top left hand corner.
  4. Candidates should enclose photocopies of their professional qualifications, and provide relevant documentary evidence of experience claimed together with the MOI Application Form, failing which consideration would not be given to the application.
  5. Applications not made on the MOI Application Form will not be accepted. Incomplete, inadequate or inaccurate filling of the Application Form may entail elimination of the candidate.
  6. Applications received after the closing date and time will not be considered.

Note

It is the onus of the candidates to provide documentary evidence from the relevant authorities (Higher Education Commission or Mauritius Qualifications Authority) in case their qualifications are not exactly the same as specified in the Advertisement. No such Applications will be considered if the Equivalence Certificates have not been submitted by the closing date of the Advertisement.

The Board of the Mauritius Oceanography Institute reserves the right to convene only the best and most qualified candidates for interview as well as the right not to make any appointment following this advertisement.
